Overview
Isogashi is a mysterious yokai shown by name and figure in Edo-period scrolls. Later writers describe it as a possessing spirit that makes people restless and unable to stop working.
Encounter
It does not belong to a fixed place. It quietly possesses a person, who then feels uneasy when still and strangely relieved only while moving from task to task.
Lore
Isogashi appears in scrolls such as Hyakki Yagyo Emaki in the Matsui Library and a similar figure appears in Hyakumonogatari Bakemono Emaki. The scrolls give no explanation; Mizuki Shigeru popularized the possession interpretation.
Traits
It does not kill, but it makes rest feel like guilt. The possessed person grows dependent on constant busyness, reflecting anxieties about work, survival, and modern overactivity.
