Overview

Uwan is a house yokai from Aomori that frightens people near old houses or abandoned buildings by suddenly shouting "uwan." It does nothing but cry out, and its true nature is unknown.

Encounter

Passing a deserted old mansion at night, one hears the cry from within. A person who buys and sleeps in such a house may hear the voice fill the rooms, though neighbors outside hear nothing.

Lore

Toriyama Sekien drew Uwan in the Wind volume of Gazu Hyakki Yagyo in 1776. The Aomori old-house tale appears in Yamada Norio's Tohoku Kaidan no Tabi.

Traits

It lives in old houses and abandoned dwellings, startling residents or passersby with one loud cry. The sound is heard only by those inside; it does not appear and attack.
