Unknown thing that drops onto the back at night
Oigakari
The Hiba night road is dark. The only footsteps should be your own. Then a cold weight drops across your shoulders, and there is nothing behind you.
Overview
Oigakari is an unidentified yokai from the Hiba area of old Bingo Province, now around Shobara, Hiroshima. It is said to fall or press onto a person's back on a night road.
Encounter
Walking alone at night in Hiba, a traveler suddenly feels something cover the back from behind. Its form is unclear, and the shock alone may leave the person bedridden.
Lore
The tradition is noted in sources such as Yanagita Kunio's Yokai Dangi. It is related to obariyon and other regional beings that cover the head or body on night roads.
Traits
It appears without showing a body and pins or startles the person from behind. Most accounts stress fear rather than fatal harm, though related covering yokai can cause suffocation.
